The whole reason you bought that lake lot was because you love the woods and the lakes, right?  You know it!!!  Now you’ve built your house on it and you have a wooded slope that goes to the lakeshore.

How do you walk down that slope to the dock and still maintain the woods that you love?  

1. Make minimal impact.  
2. Disturb as little of the trees and undergrowth as possible. 
3. Choose your materials wisely.

The naturally shaped stone steps in this photo showcase the use of proper materials when wanting to maintain the surrounding woods and maintain a “natural” feel.  No cookie cutter shapes here! 

The steps go around the existing trees and boulders.  The stone steps in this photo are quite large, and have a nice large level surface on each step for safety.  No more tripping over roots. 

We tucked in fieldstones along the edges of the steps in a naturalized manner to help prevent mulch from spilling onto the steps and to help maintain the sloped areas to the edges of the steps.  This is another “natural-feeling” choice in materials.

The stone retaining wall above has an amazing feeling to it.  It actually has an irregular bluestone patio above it and the view out to the lake is incredible from there.
