Container Gardening

Containers are a fun way to add a burst of color to any area. This amazing container has a beautiful arrangement of colorful annual flowers. Not only that but this photo shows a tiny little group of furniture which adds a whimsical touch and makes you wonder if the fairies have been there!

The container garden in this photo draws your attention to the ending point of a stone retaining wall. Other containers may enhance areas of your yard such as the porch steps, window sills, deck corners or countless other spots. Containers can be used to grow many types of plants. They often are used for herbs, vegetables, and flowers. It is best not to put plants in them that you want to survive the winter such as shrubs or small trees. Only annual type plants should be used.

Use a good potting soil and keep it fresh every year. Make sure to empty the pot of its soil in the fall or else the pot may break due to the freeze/thaw of the soil left in the pot.

If your container garden is in a sunny area, there is a product you can add to the soil that will help keep the soil moist. Keep in mind though, that container gardens always need regular daily attention and be carefully monitored for water. Containers can easily dry out.

Hanging annuals such as petunias along a front porch in between each post is a classic style of container garden. Try being creative with your containers too. They could be used in so many areas of the garden. How about using a tall container as a center piece in the center of a pathway ‘hub’? Or, how about growing a little mini vegetable garden in some containers just outside your kitchen door?

Container Gardening is gardening that almost everyone loves!
